The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has resigned from office.
Egbetokun, whose tenure was extended by one year in 2025 by President Bola Tinubu, tendered his resignation letter on Tuesday, citing personal family reasons.
Presidential spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in response to enquiries from journalists.
“A statement will be issued later in the day to this effect,” he said.
“Egbetokun resigned today. He was not sacked,” Onanuga added.
Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023. His appointment was subsequently confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.
Appointed at the age of 58, he was originally due for retirement on September 4, 2024, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60.
However, the National Assembly amended the Police Act, enabling him to serve his full four-year term unless removed by the President.
A successor is expected to be announced by the Presidency later on Tuesday.
