President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have agreed to deepen bilateral relations, with a strong focus on security cooperation, power infrastructure and railway development.
The commitment was reached during a telephone conversation on Wednesday afternoon, where both leaders explored strategic areas of collaboration between Nigeria and Germany.
A key highlight of the discussion was enhanced security cooperation, particularly in addressing instability in the Sahel region.
President Tinubu stressed the urgent need for intelligence and reconnaissance support, noting that the Sahel corridor requires coordinated intervention. He called for the supply of used helicopters to strengthen intelligence-gathering operations in the region.
Both leaders expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation and reaffirmed their readiness to collaborate on stabilisation efforts.
The two leaders also discussed Nigeria’s Presidential Power Initiative, with Tinubu indicating that the country would require further support in power transmission.
Chancellor Merz pledged that Siemens would be prepared to provide technical assistance, while Deutsche Bank would be willing to finance aspects of the project.
In addition to power, they agreed to strengthen cooperation in railway development, creative arts and skills acquisition.
Diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Germany have spanned approximately 65 years. Chancellor Merz expressed anticipation for the arrival of Nigeria’s new ambassador to Berlin, signalling continued diplomatic engagement.
He also emphasised cultural cooperation, advocating the establishment of a Great Museum of African Arts to promote heritage and strengthen people-to-people connections.
The telephone discussion, which lasted about nine minutes, marked another step toward reinforcing security collaboration and expanding economic partnerships between both nations.
