A devastating fire outbreak on Monday night razed no fewer than 10 shops at the Iya Maryam Adebara Complex in the Ogunpa Market area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday.

Akinwande said the agency received a distress call at 8:11 p.m. from the Baale of Ogunpa, Alhaji Nurudeen Lawal, alerting authorities to the fire outbreak.

He explained that firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene and arrived to find about 10 shops already engulfed in flames.

“Our officers swiftly got into action and successfully prevented the fire from spreading to other shops and nearby properties,” Akinwande said.

He added that the Federal Fire Service also supported efforts to extinguish the blaze, helping to contain the fire and avert further damage within the busy market area.

According to Akinwande, preliminary findings indicated that the fire was caused by the fueling of a running generator by one of the shop occupants, which triggered the inferno.

He noted that no casualties were recorded during the incident and commended officers of the Iyaganku Police Headquarters for providing security and maintaining order throughout the emergency response.
