Two senators elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Taraba State have formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during plenary of the Senate in Abuja.
The lawmakers are Senator Manu Haruna, representing Taraba Central, and Senator Isa Shuaibu Lau, representing Taraba North.
Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, announced the defection of the two lawmakers separately after reading their letters on the floor of the Red Chamber.
In their letters, the senators stated that their decision to leave the PDP followed deep reflection, extensive consultations with constituents, and a reassessment of political realities and developmental aspirations.
One of the letters read: “I formally notify the Senate of my decision to withdraw from the PDP and align with the APC, having concluded that my representation would be better advanced on this platform.”
The senators urged the Senate to update its records to reflect their defection in accordance with parliamentary procedures and legislative rules.
Welcoming the lawmakers into the ruling party, Senate Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Monguno, said the APC had transformed Nigeria’s political and developmental landscape.
Monguno described the party’s achievements as “unparalleled and unprecedented,” adding that defecting senators would be accorded the status and privileges of foundation members of the APC caucus.
Reacting to the development, Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP-Benue South), expressed sadness over the move, stating that the senators had left with mandates given under the PDP without adequate consultation.
“My colleagues have moved with our mandate without proper consultation. I wish them well and hope the APC fulfils their wishes,” Moro said, while reaffirming his position as Minority Leader.
In his remarks, Senate President Akpabio advised the APC to manage its expanding membership carefully, warning that rapid growth could trigger internal challenges if not properly handled.
