Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has confirmed that the proposed Igbo Thanksgiving Day will now be observed on the last Saturday of January annually, instead of the initially proposed Sunday.
The clarification was made in a statement issued on Wednesday in Enugu by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, after a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday.
According to Dr. Chukwu, the adjustment followed a formal request from the Igbo College of Bishops, prompting the NEC to amend two earlier resolutions reached at the Imeobi meeting of December 23, 2025.
He disclosed that the event has also been renamed Igbo Adoration And Thanksgiving Day and will be observed every year in perpetuity.
Chukwu explained that the modifications were spiritually motivated and would be formally presented to the next Imeobi meeting scheduled before the end of the first quarter of 2026.
Under the new arrangement, all churches across Igbo land are expected to observe adoration and prayers from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on the designated Saturday.
The NEC also approved the constitution of a nine-member committee, chaired by Deputy President General, Mr Okey Nwadinobi, to outline the modalities and terms of reference for Ohanaeze’s standing committees.
The meeting was presided over by the President General, Azuta Mbata, with all 16 NEC members in attendance.
Representatives of the Igbo College of Bishops, including Archbishops David Onuoha and Sosthenes Eze, were also present alongside other prominent clerics.
Ohanaeze reaffirmed its commitment to unity, spiritual upliftment, and the collective advancement of the Igbo nation and Nigeria at large.
