The Ebonyi State Police Command has announced the successful rescue of a six-year-old girl abducted by suspected kidnappers in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed on Thursday that the child was rescued on Tuesday after a prompt report by her mother, Mrs. Obasi Daberechi.
According to Ukandu, the girl was abducted on January 6 from her mother’s shop in the Onuebonyi area of Abakaliki by suspects who pretended to be customers. The abductors later contacted the family and demanded a ransom of ₦50 million for the child’s release.
He said operatives of the Rapid Response Squad immediately launched an investigation, using intelligence and tracking to trace the suspects to a hideout at Agogboriga Layout in Abakaliki.
“The operatives acted swiftly and professionally, leading to the successful rescue of the child without injury,” Ukandu said.
He confirmed that two male suspects, both aged 23, were arrested in connection with the crime and are currently undergoing interrogation.
Ukandu added that the suspects would be charged to court after the completion of investigations.
Following the operation, the police command urged residents of Ebonyi State to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities.
He provided the command’s control room emergency line, 07064515001, for timely reporting, stressing that community cooperation remains critical to sustaining security and preventing crime.
