The Kogi road crash that occurred along the Ejule–Enugu highway has claimed the lives of 12 persons, with two others sustaining injuries, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.
Confirming the incident on Saturday in Lokoja, the FRSC Sector Commander in Kogi State, Mr. Tenimu Etuku, described the Kogi road crash as fatal and deeply unfortunate, noting that a child was among those who lost their lives.
According to Etuku, the Kogi road crash occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday at the Iboko community in Idah Local Government Area. The accident involved an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus belonging to Romchi Mass Transit.
He explained that the bus was travelling from Abuja to the eastern part of the country when it rammed into a faulty articulated vehicle that had been parked on the highway. Preliminary findings by the FRSC attributed the Kogi road crash to excessive speeding.
The sector commander said FRSC rescue personnel responded promptly to the scene of the Kogi road crash, evacuating the injured victims to Mercy of Jesus Hospital, Ejule, for medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased were deposited at a nearby morgue.
Expressing condolences to the families affected by the Kogi road crash, Etuku warned motorists against dangerous driving habits, particularly speeding and reckless overtaking, which he said continue to account for a high number of fatal accidents.
“At this yuletide season, motorists must be cautious and adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations to avoid road crashes and needless loss of lives,” he said, adding that responsible driving would support efforts by the FRSC and the Federal Government to reduce traffic fatalities nationwide.
Etuku further urged drivers to exercise patience and maintain safe driving practices, especially during long-distance travel, noting that strict compliance with safety measures could prevent a recurrence of tragedies such as the Kogi road crash.
