The Edo State Government has significantly strengthened surveillance across major highways, forests, and vulnerable communities following recent threats issued by a self-proclaimed bandit in a viral social media video. Governor Monday Okpebholo ordered the sweeping security measures to prevent possible attacks and restore public confidence.
In a statement released in Benin, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, confirmed that multiple security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local vigilante groups, and the Edo Special Security Squad-had commenced coordinated operations in response to the threats.
“The attention of the Edo Government has been drawn to a trending video circulating on social media. The video featured a self-acclaimed bandit issuing threats and claiming presence around Ekpoma and adjoining communities in Edo Central Senatorial District,” the statement said.
According to Itua, Governor Okpebholo has treated security as a top priority since assuming office and continues to tighten Edo’s surveillance architecture. Over the past weeks, he has held ongoing strategic briefings with security commanders and activated state-wide monitoring systems to ensure early detection and rapid response to any credible threat.
Key areas under reinforced surveillance include the Benin-Auchi Expressway, Ekpoma-Uromi Road, Ehor-Iruekpen axis, Benin Bypass, Ewu-Irua-Ubiaja route, and the Benin-Afuze-Auchi corridor. These locations are known transit routes that criminal networks often target.
“The measures are designed to ensure early detection, swift response, and sustained pressure against criminal networks,” Itua stated.
He further disclosed that intensified search-and-comb operations are underway across forests and boundary communities. These are supported by expanded intelligence gathering, coordinated patrols, and renewed collaboration among federal, state, and community-based security units.
Significant breakthroughs have already been recorded, including arrests linked to recent security breaches. Itua said several actionable leads are being pursued, and operations will continue until all parts of the state – urban centres, rural communities, and major transit corridors, are fully secured.
Residents were urged to remain calm, vigilant, and supportive of security efforts. The statement also advised the public to avoid spreading unverified videos or panic-driven narratives that could undermine ongoing operations.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to deploying all lawful measures to protect lives and property, emphasising that criminality would not be allowed to thrive anywhere in Edo State.
