The passing of Segun Awolowo has left a weight on my heart that words struggle to carry. Some friendships arrive by chance, but over time evolve into true brotherhood. That is what Segun became to me – a brother anchored in sincerity, humility, and quiet strength.
Our paths crossed through Prince Senator Lanre Tejuoso, and from that moment, Segun’s warmth and sense of purpose were unmistakable. Through the years, our Abuja days became a tapestry of honest conversations, shared commitments, and mutual respect. He never forced relationships; he built them patiently, with character and unwavering loyalty.
One memory stands firmly etched in my mind – his close, genuine rapport with Alhaji Modibo, the former Minister of the FCTA. Segun and I could walk into Modibo’s office at any moment without scheduling or protocol. That privilege existed not because of political proximity, but because of the deep respect Segun Awolowo earned through integrity. His relationships were never transactional; they were rooted in trust and sustained by his sincerity.
Professionally, Segun Awolowo embodied the highest standard of public service. As Special Assistant to President Olusegun Obasanjo, he worked with a level of dedication that is increasingly rare. His leadership later as Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) was transformative. It was no surprise that President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him, and President Muhammadu Buhari retained him – proof that true impact transcends politics. Even in 2021 when his tenure ended, the sector honoured him not out of politeness but because he genuinely changed the trajectory of the institution.
Yet Segun Awolowo ’s true greatness went beyond titles. He was a kind soul with an instinctive ability to make people feel seen and valued. He was loyal. He was consistent. He listened more than he spoke, and when he did speak, it was with depth and encouragement. He carried the weight of his family name with dignity, but carried his friendships with even greater tenderness.
As he reunites with our departed brother, Captain Idahosa Hosa Wells Okunbo, I take solace in the thought of their companionship restored. Segun, please greet him for us. Tell him we are holding steady, guided by the values both of you lived by – kindness, courage, generosity, and grace. Tell him his legacy remains alive in the countless lives he touched.
Today, I honour not only the public servant but the friend whose presence enriched my journey. His departure is a solemn reminder that true greatness is not measured by years, but by the light one leaves behind. The light of Segun Awolowo will continue to shine because it was built on service, integrity, and love.
May God comfort his family, strengthen all who mourn him, and grant his noble soul eternal rest.
