The Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy has postponed the 2025 National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST), originally scheduled to begin on November 22 in Enugu State. The decision followed a careful review of the national atmosphere and the growing insecurity affecting several communities.
The announcement was made in a statement issued in Abuja by Nneka Anibeze, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Minister. She said the Minister, Hannatu Musawa, approved the postponement after consulting with relevant stakeholders and assessing the emotional weight of recent national events.
“In solidarity with affected families and communities, and out of deep respect for the lives lost, the festival has been postponed to a later date,” the statement noted. It added that the current wave of insecurity made it inappropriate to proceed with a major cultural gathering.
The ministry emphasised that NAFEST has long served as a powerful platform for unity and cultural diplomacy, projecting Nigeria’s image as a resilient and culturally rich nation. With more than 28 states already in Enugu preparing for the event, this year’s edition was expected to showcase national cohesion and confidence.
However, officials said postponing the festival was the most responsible choice given the prevailing situation. A new date will be announced after further consultations with stakeholders and security agencies.
The ministry expressed appreciation to participating states, cultural troupes, partners and the public for their understanding, reaffirming its commitment to promoting Nigeria’s cultural diversity through a revitalised and more unifying NAFEST when conditions improve.
