Rising insecurity in Plateau State has prompted the Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to order the immediate closure of all primary and junior secondary schools. The board said the decision was necessary to prevent potential threats and protect pupils, teachers and school infrastructure.
Richard Jonah, SUBEB’s Public Relations Officer, announced the directive on Friday in Jos, stressing that the measure underscored the urgency of taking proactive steps as insecurity continues to create widespread unease.
According to the statement, all Government Junior Model Secondary Schools (GJMSSs) will shut down effective Saturday, November 22, while primary and day schools are to close on Monday, November 24.
Jonah assured parents and stakeholders that the closure is temporary but vital for safeguarding communities. He said the board’s action aims to reassure residents that authorities are prioritising student welfare amid escalating insecurity concerns.
He further urged Local Government Education Authorities, school heads and community leaders to comply fully with the directive and maintain heightened vigilance.
