The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has affirmed that diplomatic channels between the governments of Nigeria and the United States are working effectively to promote mutual understanding and cooperation.

Speaking during an interview with the UK-based Sky News programme, “The World With Yalda Hakim,” Idris said diplomatic channels have been opened to address the tense relationship and to enhance communication between both nations.

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Malam Rabiu Ibrahim, the Minister emphasized that ongoing dialogue through these diplomatic channels was already yielding positive outcomes.

“We believe that most of the information circulating stems from a lack of proper understanding of the diversity and complexity of the problem we have at hand,” Idris stated.

The Minister also noted that there is evidence of a connection between a proscribed separatist group and certain U.S. lobby organizations working to misrepresent Nigeria’s internal affairs. He revealed that some of these lobbyists were actively using diplomatic channels to push misleading narratives within the U.S. political establishment.

“We have seen how these lobbyists set up operations in the U.S., contacting high-ranking officials to influence perceptions about Nigeria,” he added.

Idris reaffirmed that the U.S. government has historically supported Nigeria in the fight against terrorism and emphasized the need for renewed collaboration through constructive diplomatic channels.

“The U.S. government has always helped Nigeria in combating security challenges. What we are asking is for continued partnership so that peace can be restored once and for all,” he said.

The Minister expressed concern about certain figures and reports emerging from U.S. institutions, noting that they often fail to reflect the realities on the ground. He called on the international community to engage constructively through verified diplomatic channels and to appreciate Nigeria’s unique diversity and complexity.

“We urge global partners to understand that some assumptions are based on data that cannot withstand scientific scrutiny,” he explained.

Idris further reiterated that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion and that ongoing conflicts in parts of the country are not driven by religious persecution. He stressed that Nigeria remains a multi-faith nation committed to peaceful coexistence, with diplomatic channels serving as vital tools in reinforcing truth and understanding at the international level.
