Enugu food security – The Enugu State Government has restated its unwavering commitment to food security and farmers’ empowerment through sustainable agricultural expansion and mechanisation.
Governor Peter Mbah made this known during the 2025 World Food Day celebration organised by the State Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation on Thursday in Enugu.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Mbah said his administration was expanding land access through the Enugu State Agricultural Land Bank, securing 130,000 hectares across rural communities to lay the foundation for sustainable growth. Enugu food security

He disclosed that the state had begun deploying modern machinery with a target of 1,000 tractors through the newly established tractor assembly and service centre. So far, 120 tractors have been delivered, 98 are in transit, while 800 will be assembled locally to ensure timely planting and harvesting. Enugu food security
According to the governor, over the past year, smallholder farmers across the 260 wards of Enugu have been empowered with cleared farmland, improved seedlings, mechanisation, extension services, and guaranteed market access.
“Enugu State is embracing greenhouse farming for year-round cultivation, adopting water-saving technologies, and rehabilitating key state assets such as United Palm Products Limited and Sunrise Flour Mills,” Mbah said.
He emphasised that agriculture remains central to his development agenda, built on public investment, private sector participation, and strategic partnerships.
Mbah added that Enugu recently distributed improved cassava stems, rice, maize, and other agro-inputs to 40,000 registered farmers to strengthen the domestic market and reduce post-harvest losses.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Mr. Patrick Ubru, said the government was determined to make Enugu the food basket of the South East by expanding the cultivated land by an additional 300,000 hectares beyond the existing 115,000 hectares currently managed by smallholder farmers.
“Through mechanisation and a strengthened rural economy, we are empowering farmers to produce more food for Enugu, the South East, and Nigeria in general,” Ubru said. Enugu food security

Also speaking, Alhaji Sani Nnaji, an agricultural entrepreneur, commended the government for supporting 40,000 farmers with improved inputs during the wet farming season, saying such empowerment is key to sustaining Enugu’s food security drive. GMTNewsng
