TEL AVIV, Sept. 21, 2025 — Israel has intensified its ground assault in Gaza City, sending tanks and infantry deeper into the enclave as overnight airstrikes left dozens dead, fueling mounting concerns over the humanitarian toll.

According to Gaza health officials, at least 34 Palestinians, including children, were killed in strikes on residential areas, while another 31 people, among them a pregnant woman and her two children, died in separate bombardments. Medics said the victims also included a hospital nurse and his family, highlighting what they described as “indiscriminate attacks” on civilians.

The Israeli military maintained that its operations are aimed at dismantling Hamas infrastructure. An army spokesperson said the goal remains “to defeat Hamas, destroy its military capabilities, and ensure the safe return of hostages.” Israel also accused Hamas of embedding its fighters within civilian areas, a claim Palestinian groups reject.

Residents of Gaza reported scenes of devastation as families fled neighborhoods reduced to rubble. International aid organizations warned that the crisis is worsening, with limited access to food, water, and medical supplies. The United Nations Children’s Fund stated that children are among the hardest hit, with reports of deaths linked to malnutrition and lack of medical care.

Global diplomatic pressure is intensifying. Ahead of the United Nations General Assembly, several Western countries, including the United Kingdom and Canada, signaled plans to recognize a Palestinian state. European diplomats argued that such recognition is necessary to “create a path toward peace” and a two-state solution.

Meanwhile, Hamas released what it called “parting images” of 48 remaining hostages, vowing that Israel would not see them again. Analysts said the move underscores the breakdown of negotiations and raises fears for the captives’ fate.

As battles raged, critics accused Israel of committing “collective punishment,” while supporters argued that dismantling Hamas is essential for long-term security. With Gaza’s population enduring relentless bombardment and Israel insisting on its military objectives, the conflict shows no sign of abating. GMTNewsng
