In a chilling reminder of the growing insecurity plaguing northern Nigeria, at least 14 gold miners were savagely killed and several others wounded on Thursday during a brutal, broad daylight attack by heavily armed bandits in Gobirawa Chali, a community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The attackers reportedly stormed the mining site and opened fire indiscriminately on the miners, who were caught completely off guard. The attack, which has since sent shockwaves across the region, underscores the deepening grip of lawlessness and terror inflicted by non-state armed groups.

“In broad daylight, bandits attacked Gobirawa Chali community in Maru LGA of Zamfara State. They gruesomely killed 14 gold miners and injured several people during the attack,” said security analyst Bakatsine in a post on his X account.

As of the time of reporting, the Zamfara State Police Command had yet to release an official statement, further fueling public outrage over the perceived slow response of security agencies.

Residents are now calling on both state and federal authorities to urgently confront the menace of banditry, which has continued to devastate communities, destroy livelihoods, and claim countless innocent lives across the region.

“How many more Nigerians must die before the government takes decisive action?” asked a local elder in Gobirawa Chali, speaking anonymously out of fear of reprisal. “These attacks are no longer random. They are calculated acts of terror, and we are being left at the mercy of killers.”

The escalating violence has reignited calls for sweeping security reforms, with many accusing the government of neglecting its fundamental responsibility – protecting the lives and property of its citizens.

“This is beyond unacceptable,” Bakatsine continued. “If the government fails to act now, these bandits will become bolder. Every inch of inaction is an invitation for more bloodshed.”

As Zamfara mourns yet another senseless loss of life, Nigerians everywhere are demanding not just justice – but a decisive, coordinated effort to end the reign of terror gripping rural communities. GMTNewsng
