In a remarkable blend of tradition and modernity, Enugu is set to host the highly anticipated New Yam Music Festival this Saturday, October 12, 2024, at the iconic Michael Okpara Square in Independence Layout. The event, endorsed by the Enugu State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, promises to celebrate the richness of the Igbo New Yam festival while infusing the vibrancy of contemporary Afrobeat music, creating a unique platform where culture meets the innovative spirit of the youth.

Receiving the festival’s organizers in his Enugu office, renowned Chartered Accountant and Fellow of Ethical Leadership at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Ben Etiaba, expressed his delight at the initiative. “This is exactly what Enugu needs right now—a celebration of our cultural heritage while embracing the youthful energy that defines our modern identity,” Chief Etiaba said. He commended the festival for offering the youth an opportunity to connect with their roots through a blend of old traditions and new music trends.

Dame Madueke Esq, the Enugu State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, also lauded the initiative, highlighting the State government’s unwavering support for the festival. “We are proud to endorse this event because it reflects Enugu’s rich cultural tapestry while showcasing the creativity of our young people,” she stated. According to Dame Madueke, the festival is not just about entertainment but a strategic move to position Enugu as a cultural hub that embraces both heritage and innovation.

Enugu, often described as the heartbeat of creativity in Nigeria, has long been home to many icons in the music and movie industries. With this festival, the State continues to solidify its reputation as a breeding ground for talent. “Enugu has historically been the incubator for many superstars, and this festival will further project the city as a global cultural and creative destination,” remarked Professor Charles Okeke, a cultural historian from UNN.

The festival, which combines the age-old Igbo New Yam festival with modern Afrobeat music, is being hailed as a crossover platform for the youth. It is designed to bridge the gap between the past and the future, giving young people a chance to partake in the traditional festival while enjoying the pulsating sounds of today’s music. “Our goal is to make culture accessible and enjoyable for the youth,” said Nneka Okoli, one of the event’s organizers. “We want them to understand that tradition can coexist with innovation, and this festival is the perfect blend of both.”

The youth of Enugu have also expressed excitement about the upcoming event. Chuka Eze, a 23-year-old music enthusiast, shared his anticipation, “This is a brilliant idea. It’s not every day you get to attend a New Yam festival with the kind of music we listen to. I’m really looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.”

Chief Ben Etiaba, a long-standing advocate for youth empowerment, emphasized the importance of events like the New Yam Music Festival in giving young minds a platform to thrive. “At a time when living in Nigeria is tough for many, especially the youth, we need creative outlets like this to inspire and uplift their spirits,” he said, adding that the festival symbolizes resilience and adaptability in the face of current economic challenges.

The Commissioner also stressed the festival’s potential to boost tourism in the State. “Events like this draw attention not just locally but internationally. They show the world that Enugu is a place where culture is alive and thriving, and where our youth are leading the charge in creative reinvention,” Dame Madueke added, inviting tourists and residents alike to attend the event.

As Enugu prepares for what promises to be a memorable weekend, the festival stands as a testament to the city’s rich heritage and its ability to evolve with the times. With the support of key figures like Chief Etiaba and Dame Madueke Esq, the New Yam Music Festival is set to become a staple in Enugu’s cultural calendar, blending tradition and contemporary flair in a celebration that reflects the true spirit of the Coal City.
