Umuwala Nkwerre, Imo State Nigeria – On the vibrant Afor market day, Wednesday, December 27, 2023, the Umuwala community in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria, witnessed a historic event – the traditional title-taking ceremony of Nze Onyedikachi Umelo. A 17-year-old prodigy, Justice Onyedikachi Umelo, born and raised in Canada, embraced his Igbo roots by undertaking the sacred Nze na Ozo initiation. The ceremony not only marked a personal milestone for Nze Onyedikachi but also underscored the resilience of Igbo culture.

The significance of Afor market day in Igbo cosmology is deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of the people. Afor, one of the four Igbo market days, holds spiritual and communal importance. It serves as a symbol of unity, commerce, and cultural exchange. Choosing this auspicious day for the Nze na Ozo ceremony adds a layer of cultural authenticity to the event, reinforcing the connection between tradition and the contemporary world.

The ceremony, hosted at the palatial home of Nze Ugonnaya Hilary Umelo at Umuwala in Nkwerre LGA, unfolded amidst a gathering of influential personalities from diverse backgrounds. Honourable Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme, a luminary of the Nigerian Supreme Court, praised the initiative, stating, “Such practices ensure that Igbo culture doesn’t go extinct, preserving our rich heritage for generations to come.” This sentiment reflects the broader significance of traditional title takings in maintaining cultural continuity.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to have been initiated into the esteemed Nze na Ozo traditional society as Nze Nnanyereugo. This Igbo cultural rite comes with great responsibility, and I am committed to upholding the values it represents,” Justice Onyedikachi Umelo expressed with gratitude evident for the bestowed honor. “I pledge to hold it with integrity, fairness, and justice as I embark on this new journey. The rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Igbo people will guide my actions as I contribute to the continued growth of our community.”

Addressing the Nigerian youth of Igbo extraction, particularly those residing outside Nigeria, he passionately conveyed, “Our global diaspora is a testament to the strength and resilience of our Igbo people. Embrace your roots, celebrate your heritage, and actively contribute to the development of both your host countries and Nigeria.” Umelo junior continued with a call to action, asking, “How can we foster stronger connections between the youth in the diaspora and those at home within the framework of our Igbo cultural values? How can we leverage technology to create platforms for meaningful dialogue and collaboration?”

With a vision of unity and collaboration rooted in Igbo traditions, Justice Onyedikachi Umelo concluded, “Let us work together to build bridges that transcend borders, fostering a sense of shared identity and purpose within the context of our rich cultural heritage. In doing so, we can contribute to a brighter future for Nigeria and the global Igbo community.”

Among the esteemed guests were Obiageri Ihekwoaba, a veteran Nollywood actor, and the chairperson of Igbo women actors. The ceremony also drew participation from foreign-based Nigerians, exemplifying the global reach of Igbo cultural celebrations. The Marist Brothers Juniorate Uturu old boys association, led by Mazi Emma Offor (Chinyelugo na Izuogu), added an academic touch to the event, showcasing the diversity of attendees.

Umuada Umuwala, led by Applonia and Eucharia Emem, displayed the strength and unity of Igbo women. The Umuwala Autonomous Community, with its home-based males, joined the celebration, emphasizing the communal spirit inherent in Igbo traditions. The presence of Nze na Ozo Umuwala – Nkwerre, Imo State, added an official and ceremonial touch to the gathering.

The ceremony, conducted by the Nkwerre Nze na Ozo society, resonated with the beats of the Kalu Uka-led Ohafia War Dance (Ikpirikpe) from Abia State. The captivating performance added a theatrical and energetic element to the celebration, connecting the audience with the warrior spirit of the Igbo people. Mmiri Kwe Onwa Ya-Agbaa cultural group from Nkwerre, led by Ifeanyi Mba, contributed to the cultural mosaic, showcasing the richness and diversity of Igbo artistic expressions.

Nze Onyedikachi Umelo’s traditional title, “Nnanyereugo,” holds a special place in the Igbo cultural tapestry. It signifies the embodiment of esteemed qualities, including wisdom, integrity, and leadership. As a 17-year-old who has spent much of his life outside Nigeria, Nze Onyedikachi’s embrace of this title reflects a commitment to preserving and promoting Igbo heritage among the youth in the diaspora.
