In a shocking turn of events, Dr. Nnaemeka Ogbene, the master-rigger of the 2023 Enugu Governorship election in Nkanu East Local Government Area, is now reaping the consequences of his actions. Despite enjoying an alleged hefty reward of N16.5 million for manipulating the election results in favor of the PDP, Ogbene finds himself haunted and isolated from society. The once gregarious computer science lecturer at the University of Nigeria Nsukka is now living a life of misery and loneliness.

Ever since his involvement in the electoral heist, Ogbene has faced taunts and relentless torment wherever he goes. Friends have abandoned him, and even his own family keeps a safe distance. Such is the weight of the evil seeds he planted. The situation has become so unbearable that Ogbene, fearing for his safety, requested police protection. As a result, the very people he helped ascend to power reluctantly assigned some policemen to guard him.

Unfortunately for Ogbene, life has turned extremely miserable even with the presence of police protection. Governor Peter Mbah, who previously allowed him to stay at the Governor’s Lodge in Enugu Government House, eventually evicted him and relocated him to the boys’ quarters at the remotest end of the Government House fuel dump area where cleaners and messengers reside. When he had no place to go, Ogbene pleaded with the head of logistics at the Government House, who reluctantly provided him with a single room in the dingy junior staff section. This remote section is infested with weed, lizards, rodents, and pests, making it an inhospitable living environment, our reporter garthered.

Ogbene’s Misery Revealed in Phone Call

Recently, Ogbene expressed his despair about his current living conditions to a source. Speaking on phone to a source who doesn’t want his name in prints, Ogbene lamented that he never imagined Governor Mbah would make his life so unbearable after all he did to secure his position as governor. Living in the same vicinity as the policemen assigned to protect him, Ogbene highlighted the dismal state of his room, devoid of mosquito nets and constantly plagued by mosquito bites. The stench of the place is akin to a refuse dump, further dampening his spirits. And to add to his misfortune, he fears renting a house in Enugu or returning to his own house in Nsukka due to the mocking and ostracization he faces from society.

Despite these hardships, Ogbene continues to fulfill his teaching duties at the University of Nigeria, albeit with an escort of police officers to and from Enugu. In a recorded phone conversation leaked by a UK based Nigerian source, Ogbene desperately tries to deny responsibility for the illogical election theft in Nkanu East LGA. He stumbles incoherently, attempting to shift blame onto lax security measures and unnamed individuals. The Nkanu Electoral heist remains a hotly contested case at the Enugu State Governorship Elections Petitions Tribunal. As the legal battle wages on, the once-prominent master-rigger faces the harsh consequences of his actions, a testament to the old adage that “the evil that men do lives after them.” Whether Ogbene will ever find redemption or escape the clutches of his misfortune remains uncertain.
