Enugu: Akpawfu, a town located in the Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, is facing a grave situation as a one-sided local security outfit, allegedly instituted by Chief Christopher Nnamani of Ajame Agu, continues to aid criminals who wreak havoc and cause mayhem in the community. The Akpawfu League of Professionals (ALP), led by Chairman Godfrey Owo and Secretary Gabriel Nnamani, strongly condemns the activities of this biased security organization.
According to reports, the local neighbourhood group and associated hoodlums are engaged in illicit acts, including falsely directing individuals believed to be officers of state security forces and agencies to arrest innocent community members of Umuanigbiyovo Oyiwode extraction. These actions are fueling unrest and undermining the peace of Akpawfu, with incidents such as arson becoming increasingly common.
Following the arrest of key members of the local neighbourhood group on Thursday, June 22, 2023, including the purported chief security officer Chineme Amuziem Nwatu and Operations Lead Goddy Nnaji, along with Onyeka Nnaji, Godwin Nnaji, Monday Nnamani, and Friday Nnamani, the community initially experienced a brief period of peace. However, chaos resurfaced once these individuals were released. On Friday, June 30, 2023, one Monday Nworie Igweshi was kidnapped at Achi village square in Ishienu Obodo-Uvuru, and has not been found as at the time of filing this report.
In light of this escalating situation, the Akpawfu League of Professionals (ALP) is issuing a fervent call for the intervention of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State. ALP believes that the governor’s direct involvement is vital in restoring lasting peace and security to the troubled community. The organization is urging Governor Mbah to thoroughly investigate the existence and operations of the one-sided local security outfit, taking into account the alleged collusion between the vigilante group and criminal elements.
Additionally, ALP is demanding a comprehensive and impartial inquiry into the illicit activities carried out by the local vigilante and hoodlums. The organization seeks to expose the truth behind the orchestrated arrests and malicious targeting of innocent community members. A transparent investigation would shed light on the extent of the vigilante group’s involvement in destructive acts that endanger the lives and properties of Akpawfu residents.
The Akpawfu League of Professionals stresses that ensuring the peace and well-being of the community must be a top priority for the government and all relevant security agencies. They emphasize the necessity for an unbiased approach in addressing the security concerns of Akpawfu. ALP also encourages the engagement of community leaders, traditional rulers, and stakeholders in the dialogue and decision-making processes to ensure a comprehensive and collaborative effort in restoring peace and stability.
As the community continues to endure the consequences of the ongoing unrest, ALP reaffirms its unwavering commitment to advocate for justice, accountability, and a safe environment for all residents of Akpawfu. Under the leadership of Chairman Godfrey Owo and Secretary Gabriel Nnamani, ALP vows to work tirelessly to bring an end to the chaos and lawlessness.
