Last Friday, a group of hoodlums reportedly attempted to assassinate the former governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha. This incident occurred along the Okigwe-Enugu expressway in Ihube community. Luckily, Okorocha was able to escape unharmed, however, one person was killed during the attack.
Speaking briefly at Samuel Anyanwu’s birthday celebration on Sunday, Okorocha shed light on the incident. Anyanwu is the governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party in Imo state. Despite the severity of the situation, Okorocha seemed to be in good spirits, and did not provide any details regarding the incident or the individuals responsible for the attack.
The assassination attempt on Okorocha is yet another sad example of the persistent security challenges plaguing Nigeria. The government is still grappling with the continuous insurgencies and criminal activities ongoing in different parts of the country. It is hoped that these issues will be addressed and sufficient protection provided for Nigerian citizens.
The security convoy was said to be that of the security operatives from the Enugu state government to provide Okorocha with security.
According to Rochas Okorocha, the former governor of Imo state, the incident which saw him attacked by hoodlums was a shocking and unwarranted occurrence. In his own words, he stated, “Why is it that after spending two days in Enugu, peacefully. It was only when I came to Imo state that I was attacked? The convoy that brought me to Imo was also attacked when it was leaving to go to Enugu. Unfortunately, one person lost his life during this incident”.
“The situation in Imo state is deeply disturbing. I am not happy with what is happening here,” Okorocha further explained. He went on to clarify that the convoy had brought him to the burial ceremony of the mother of former governor, Emeka Ihedioha. Once the ceremony was over, they dropped him at his Spibat mansion in Owerri before being attacked on their way back to Enugu.
The former governor expressed his disappointment at the security situation in Imo state, stating “This is so bad in this Imo state.” The alarming rate of criminal activities in different parts of the country is a concerning issue that needs to be addressed without delay.
