In the spirit of the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the anchor of the Christian faith, a renowned professional body, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN, Enugu and District Society (ICAN-EDS) used the period to celebrate with less privileged care homes in the Coal City State Capital.

The homes visited were the Psychiatric Rehabilitation centre Emene and the Mother Louisa Charity home (City of Refuge Rehabilitation Therapeutic Home).

Led by the indefatigable incumbent Chairman of the ICAN Enugu and District Society, Mrs Ifeoma Otiji, FCA, who said that the visit was to appreciate God for the tremendous successes recorded in the first phase of the chairmanship year, noted that ICAN EDS joyfully ended the 2022 District activities on commendable notes.

In an exclusive interview with GMTNews, Mrs Otiji also said that the charity visits were aimed at lending moral, financial and supportive hands to better the lives of the less privileged in the society.

To her “it’s our little way of showing love and giving hope to the hopeless to make them realize that life is still worth living no matter the situation”, stressing that it was “a social corporate responsibility”

Her message to the inmates of the destitute homes were in the form of motivating them to keep managing the condition around them with cheerful hearts and faces believing always that it won’t be forever. She urged them to continue to pray with trust in God for divine permanent healing.

Projecting on what she hopes to achieve, Mrs Otiji came up with intimidating agenda which include but not limited to – “provision of an air conditioning bus to ease members’ movement during official activities and tours within and outside the state.

“To create a new District from Enugu and District Society for expansion, resource allocation and more impact of the ICAN institute in Enugu state among others”.

Similarly she assured that as the newly inaugurated pioneer and chairperson of the Enugu state chapter of the Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN) “I intend to ensure that the novel chapter solidify her root in Enugu by offering valuable guidance and services as appropriate”.

Speaking further, Mrs Otiji said they intend to create “good access road from the freeway to the ICAN EDS Liaison office.

“Improve members intellectual growth and development through skills acquisition and professional trainings in this age of digital economy and on the latest trend in accounting process and procedures.

“To draw ICAN closer to the grassroot by creating awareness of the ICAN Brand in Enugu Metropolis through Radio stations, road walks, catch them young programmes at secondary Schools and Tertiary Institutions.

“Improvement in the Health Care of Members through periodic health checks, and organising routine Keep- fit exercise activities.

“We intend to collaborate with the Enugu State Government in the provision of assistance to Civil Servants and other stakeholders in the State through provision of Managerial Trainings, Computer Softwares application packages, budgetary process and control, etc.

“We also plan to improve the number of active ICAN members in Enugu and District Society through our resourceful Programmes, visits to dormant and unregistered members.

As would be expected, the immediate past Chairman of ICAN EDS, Emanuel Ekene Nnamani, FCA, speaking on the end of the year activities and charity visits, described them as a beautiful event and opportunity to say thank you to God for His provisions and protection throughout the year.

Assessing the leadership of Mrs Ifeoma Otiji, FCA, his successor, he noted that she has done so marvelously well.

According to him she has taken ICAN EDS to another level from “where we stopped.

“Our prayers is that God will reward her and help her achieve massive objectives she has in mind for our noble profession”.

Commenting on the event(s), a Deputy Director with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Gerald Nnoli, described their last event for the year as quite suitable.

Continuing he said, “we’re thanking God for His mercies, protection and goodness to the ICAN family”.

On the incumbent ICAN EDS Chairman, Nnoli said “she has shown that she is one in a million by organizing all the programmes so far executed within the first half of her chairmanship which are all successes”.

“I pray that she moves in strides from strength to strength until the end of her tenure”.

On the future of ICAN EDS, the Deputy Director said “our membership in the past years was not encouraging but now we are growing tremendously and we will continue to grow”.

He encouraged organizations and corporate entities to always consider engaging qualified persons both in accounting and auditing jobs.

The end of the year activities especially the Thanksgiving Mass which held at St Mary’s Parish Trans Ekulu Enugu was well attended and had Chief Livinus Ogomegbunam Otiji, husband to the ICAN EDS Chairman, Ifeoma, in attendance.
