Calls for concerted efforts among Nkanu people
A first class Traditional Ruler in Enugu State His Royal Highness, Igwe Barr. Obiora Igwesi Esq. has called on the people of Enugu state to favourably consider Nkanu East Local Government Area, as the permutations for where the next governor to take over from the incumbent, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, is fired up.
Igwe Igwesi who made the call while addressing newsmen Wednesday in his Palace said Nkanu East is the most disadvantaged LGA in Enugu East Senatorial zone and requested Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State to kindly endorse a candidate from Nkanu East who should be supported by all to become his successor in 2023.
The Royal father holds strong concerns over the incidents of Enugu East Senatorial District in particular, Enugu State and Igbo land in general and noted that there had been tussle and seeming disagreement over where the next governor should come from.
“For quite sometime now, there has been this tussle and seeming disagreement on where the next governor of Enugu State should come from. As a Royal father I feel it is timely that I make this appeal to politicians and my people.
Eze Igwesi
“All persons (aspirants) concerned are my persons. Those in Enugu North and Enugu West zones are my brothers and indeed true Enugu State citizens (indigenes). We Nkanu people are the ones asking for a chance.
“We have watched the government of this state since 1999 under PDP as a party which have for 3 regimes produced governors. I do not know whether there was any written agreement but it is implied that there is already a running agreement.
“I passionately request our amiable Governor, Rt. Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to support someone from Nkanu East.”
The Monarch said that peace was the pivot around which development revolved and pointed out that he invited the press for a chat not as a politician but as a traditional ruler and father to all to lend his voice to the prevailing situation in the state which was political.
“I appeal to the people of Enugu East Senatorial Zone, Nkanu in particular, to give peace and justice a chance. No one escorted another to this world, so I encourage everyone to come together and garner support for Nkanu East to produce the next governor. I’m appealing to the Governor to endorse someone from Nkanu East as the next governor of the state”.
He observed that Nkanu East looks like an abandoned area without any presence of either state or federal institution of higher learning. Furthermore he noted that if an Nkanu East man was supported to run the administration of the state, he would spread development across the state and make meaningful impact on Nkanu East LGA, develop and harness abundant human and natural resources including farming in the area.
Tracing the origin of Enugu East Senatorial District to the old Udi Division, he said as a Royal Father, he had vast knowledge of the history of the area. According to him, his late father, Rt. Hon. Igwe John Igweshi who represented Udi Central in the then House of Assembly sponsored the motion which led to the creation of Nkanu Division (the present Enugu East Senatorial zone) out of the old Udi Division. The late Rt. Hon. John Igweshi later became a multi tenured Chairman of the old Nkanu Division.
HRH Igwe Igwesi O. Igwesi Esq., of Omoha Obuoffia and traditional head of Obuoffia Awkunanaw, who occupies the Igweship stool in the oldest lineage of unbroken traditional rulership in Nkanuland advised that ceding the Enugu governorship slot to Nkanu East in 2023, “will aptly portray us as being our brothers’ keeper.
“Let us be patriotic about this not just for Nkanu East, Enugu East zone or Enugu State, but for the entire Igbo land,” he opined. GMTNews
