The Unubiko Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, has constructed and commissioned a Primary Healthcare Centre and 30 housing units for indigent residents of Ndi Okereke Abam community in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State.

Speaking during the inauguration and handover ceremony on Friday, the founder of the Foundation, Chief James Ume, said the projects were designed to enhance welfare, expand healthcare access, and address critical needs of vulnerable members of the community.

Ume, a native of Ndi Okereke Abam, said the intervention was also motivated by his desire to support the development agenda of Governor Alex Otti and complement ongoing government efforts across Abia State.

He commended the governor for prioritising infrastructure development, particularly the Abam–Arochukwu Road, and urged residents to sustain their support for the administration to ensure the delivery of democratic dividends.

Governor Alex Otti said the donated Primary Healthcare Centre aligns with his administration’s agenda to strengthen the health sector and extend access to quality, affordable healthcare services to rural communities.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, the governor said the Foundation’s intervention demonstrates the importance of effective Public-Private Partnerships in creating an enabling environment for sustainable development in Abia State.

He advised beneficiaries, especially recipients of the 30 housing units, to take ownership of the facilities, protect public assets, and ensure proper maintenance to guarantee long-term benefits for the community.

The Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, praised the quality of the Primary Healthcare Centre, noting that it is equipped with modern wards, oxygen systems, incubators, an ultramodern laboratory, and family planning services.

Uche said the facility is one of five Primary Healthcare Centres in Abam selected for retrofitting under Project Ekwueme, a state-led initiative aimed at revitalising and functionalising PHCs for improved grassroots healthcare delivery.

He called on individuals and stakeholders to support enrolment into the informal sector health insurance scheme, stressing that achieving universal health coverage requires shared responsibility beyond government policies.

Community members welcomed the projects, saying the Foundation’s intervention would improve access to quality healthcare, reduce financial hardship, and discourage reliance on unregulated medical alternatives in the rural area.

In addition, the Foundation also constructed a church hall for the Presbyterian Church in Idima Abam community, further contributing to social and community development in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State.
