The United Kingdom, Canada and Australia have jointly launched a major international initiative aimed at combating deceptive immigration schemes and protecting prospective travellers from exploitation by fraudulent agents. The campaign, announced by the British High Commission in Abuja during International Fraud Awareness Week, represents a coordinated effort to strengthen global immigration security.

The initiative, tagged the #FightingVisaFraud campaign, was developed in response to rising cases of immigration scams that have caused significant financial losses and personal hardship for victims across multiple continents. Officials from the three countries said they had identified recurring patterns of deception, ranging from forged documentation to fake job placements, that continue to undermine the integrity of their immigration systems.

According to the statement, criminal networks exploit vulnerable applicants by promising guaranteed visas, quick approvals or employment opportunities without proper qualifications. These operations often lead to financial devastation, legal penalties and heightened exposure to trafficking and other forms of exploitation. Authorities warned that perpetrators face consequences such as visa bans of up to 10 years, application refusals, criminal prosecution in some jurisdictions, and loss of all funds paid to fraudulent intermediaries.

The campaign highlights the strong partnership between the UK, Canada and Australia, countries that share long-standing historical ties and deep cooperation on immigration and security matters. Officials noted that global demand for migration has created opportunities for criminal networks that use increasingly sophisticated tactics to mislead unsuspecting applicants.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, said the campaign aims to safeguard applicants and reinforce public trust in immigration systems. He emphasised that visa fraud destroys aspirations, breaks families, and enriches criminal groups that prey on desperation. Montgomery urged applicants to use only official channels, verify every piece of advice they receive, and report any suspicious behaviour.

Canadian High Commissioner Pasquale Salvaggio reiterated Canada’s commitment to international collaboration to protect migrants from exploitation. He said the effort reflects the countries’ shared goal of maintaining transparent and secure immigration pathways for those seeking to travel, study or work abroad.

The three governments urged applicants to rely solely on official government websites, ensure that immigration advisers are properly registered and regulated, and avoid agents who demand excessive fees, promise job placements without qualifications, or propose ways to bypass mandatory requirements. They added that immigration and law enforcement agencies in all three countries continue to work closely to investigate, disrupt and prosecute networks involved in visa fraud and illegal facilitation.

They advised prospective applicants to obtain accurate information directly from:

United Kingdom: official visa and immigration portal

Canada: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

Australia: official immigration and border services website

Campaign materials, including fraud-warning guides and red flags for applicants, will be distributed through official social media pages and immigration platforms. Each country will adapt the campaign to its national context while maintaining shared goals and coordinated messaging.

The joint statement stressed that while millions of people apply legitimately each year, heightened vigilance remains essential to protect travellers and uphold the integrity of global immigration systems.
