He was popularly known as Ndaa Pascal – with “Ndaa” being a respected Igbo honorific used for highly revered elders, denoting affection, reverence, and deep respect. The passing of Ndaa Pascal Dozie, the iconic founder of the defunct Diamond Bank and former chairman of MTN Nigeria, marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s corporate and economic history. Born on April 9, 1939, and departing this world on April 8, 2025 – just a day before his 86th birthday – Ndaa Pascal leaves behind a towering legacy of visionary leadership, entrepreneurial audacity, and an unwavering commitment to the progress of Nigeria, particularly the Southeast region.

In the course of working on commissioning of the Aba Independent Power Project (IPP), our media team had the privilege of visiting Chief Dozie in his serene country home in Egbu, Owerri. Though advanced in age, his mind remained razor-sharp, his insights as profound as ever. He spoke with deep conviction about the early struggles and triumphs of establishing Diamond Bank, a bold move that reshaped Nigeria’s banking landscape. His pivotal role in MTN Nigeria’s meteoric rise further cemented his status as one of Africa’s most accomplished boardroom titans.

What struck us most during that visit was not just the richness of his experience but the depth of his passion for the development of the Southeast. He believed that economic empowerment and infrastructure – like the Aba IPP – were key to unlocking the region’s true potential. He was particularly thrilled that such a project was being established in Aba, a city he regarded as a crucible of innovation and industriousness. His support and encouragement were more than symbolic; they were part of his lifelong commitment to regional and national progress.

Ndaa Pascal’s legacy transcends boardrooms and bank vaults. He was a mentor to many, a patriot in thought and deed, and a firm believer in the transformative power of ideas, innovation, and institutions. His quiet strength, humility, and wisdom inspired those who encountered him – whether in business or in his modest village home in Owerri.

He will be sorely missed, not just by his family and close associates, but by the nation at large. Nigeria has lost one of its finest sons, and the Southeast, one of its most ardent champions. Yet, in the endeavours we make, in the businesses we grow, and in the dreams we dare to pursue, Chief Pascal Dozie’s spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. GMTNewsng
