The Rivers State Government has reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and implementing the recent Supreme Court judgment affecting the state. In response to inquiries regarding the resolutions passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly following the court’s verdict, the government clarified its stance through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Dr. Tammy Wenike Danagogo.

Danagogo, in a statement issued on March 5, 2025, disclosed that neither the Office of the Governor, nor the Office of the Deputy Governor, nor the Office of the Accountant-General had received any official communication from the House of Assembly regarding the matter. “As of the close of work on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, we are yet to receive the said letter,” he stated. He further noted that the government first learned of the Assembly’s resolutions through social media.

He recalled that Governor Siminalayi Fubara had, in a state broadcast on March 2, 2025, assured the people of Rivers State that he would abide by the Supreme Court’s ruling, regardless of his personal views on the matter. “His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, has made it clear that he will, as a law-abiding Nigerian, obey and implement the court’s decisions in accordance with the rule of law and in the best interest of the people of Rivers State,” Danagogo reaffirmed.

The government also emphasized that it had engaged its legal team to obtain the certified true copy of the Supreme Court judgment. Danagogo assured the public that once the official document is received, the government would act accordingly. “We have since been in contact with our lawyers who are still awaiting the certified true copy of the judgment,” he said, adding that the administration remained committed to implementing the ruling in a timely and responsible manner.

The clarification comes amid growing public interest in the Supreme Court’s decision and its implications for governance in Rivers State. Observers have speculated on the potential administrative and political adjustments that could follow, but the state government insists that due process will be followed.

Danagogo urged residents of the state to remain patient, assuring them that Governor Fubara’s administration is dedicated to stability and good governance. He stressed that all decisions taken would prioritize the welfare of the people.

The Rivers State Government reassured the public that it remains steadfast in upholding democratic principles and respecting the judiciary. It called for calm and cooperation as it awaits the formal transmission of the Supreme Court’s judgment and moves toward its implementation. GMTNewsng
