Enugu: Pandemonium ensued in Ibagwa-Aka, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State, when gunmen forced their way into St. Jude Catholic Church, Eburummiri, and took away the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Victor Ishiwu Saturday.
Information reaching us say the incident occurred while congregants were celebrating Holy Mass at the Parish.
The police have not confirm the incident but a Catholic priest in Nsukka diocese who would not want his name mentioned confirmed that the Parish Priest was abduction.
GMTNews learnt that the kidnappers invaded the Church premises where the priest and congregation were celebrating Holy Mass during Adoration Prayer and started shooting sporadically into the air.
The sporadic shooting forced the Congregants to scamper to safety, while the priest went into the Parish house.
An eyewitness who spoke to journalists in Nsukka on Sunday said that the kidnappers trailed the Rev Fr to the Parish house and threatened to burn down the church facilities if he refused to present himself to them.
When the cleric refused to heed their warning, the kidnappers were alleged to have forced themselves into the Parish house through the church chapel.
The kidnappers gained access to the Parish house and whisked away the Rev Fr to an unknown destination.
St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Eburummiri, Ibagwa-Aka is within the jurisdiction of the Nsukka Catholic Diocese.
Confirming the incident in a response, a priest of the diocese described it as tragic and not to be accepted.
He said that Christianity is under threat if hoodlums can confidently attack worship centres without any response from Nigerian security agencies. GMTNews
