Chibunna Ochor, a 400-level Medicine and Surgery student at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, has won the 2026/2027 Vice-Chancellor for One Day competition after emerging victorious among eight students who achieved a perfect 5.0 CGPA.

A 400-level Medicine and Surgery student of Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI), Enugu, Chibunna Ochor, has emerged winner of the institution’s Vice-Chancellor for One Day competition for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Christian Anieke, announced Ochor’s victory on Wednesday during the university’s 17th Foundation Day celebration in Enugu.

The initiative is designed to reward academic excellence and provide outstanding students with an opportunity to experience the responsibilities of university leadership.

Anieke disclosed that eight students achieved a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0 during the 2025/2026 academic session, prompting the university to organise an aptitude test to determine the overall winner.

He said Ochor emerged victorious after the assessment, adding that all eight contestants earned A grades in all their courses.

As the winner, Ochor will occupy the Vice-Chancellor’s seat for one day, address students and members of the University Governing Council and Senate, and pay an official visit to Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah.

“The eight students scored a CGPA of 5.0, meaning that they obtained A’s in all their courses. They will receive prizes alongside certificates, and I congratulate all of them,” Anieke said.

The vice-chancellor also recognised students who distinguished themselves in national debates, public speaking and other academic competitions, alongside outstanding members of staff.

He said the university had established a Directorate of Competitions to promote academic excellence and equip students to compete favourably with their counterparts in other Nigerian universities.

The initiative reflects the institution’s commitment to encouraging high academic standards, rewarding exceptional performance and developing future leaders.

Reflecting on the university’s 17th anniversary, Anieke attributed its growth and achievements to God’s grace, determination, sacrifice and the contributions of individuals who believed in its vision.

He recalled that the idea of establishing the institution emerged in the last quarter of 2007, while the National Universities Commission (NUC) conducted its first assessment visit on June 10, 2008.

According to him, the commission returned in 2009 and expressed satisfaction with the university’s infrastructural development and compliance with its requirements.

He said the process culminated in the university’s approval on October 21, 2009, during the administration of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

In his remarks, Chima Obieze, the member representing Ezeagu Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, commended the university for its contributions to human capital development.

Obieze observed that while governments often prioritise physical infrastructure, including roads, schools and hospitals, greater attention should also be given to developing the human resources required to manage and sustain such facilities.

He praised the university’s management for its commitment to education and announced an increase in his financial reward for the institution’s best graduating Law student from ₦500,000 to ₦1 million.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Nwachukwu Okeke, described the establishment and subsequent growth of Godfrey Okoye University as a remarkable achievement.

Okeke expressed gratitude to God for the institution’s progress and acknowledged the sacrifices of individuals who contributed to its establishment and continued development.

The 17th Foundation Day celebration began with a Holy Mass officiated by Anieke, while Rev. Fr. Benjamin Achi delivered the homily, commending the university for its achievements over the past 17 years.

The recognition of Ochor and other high-performing students highlighted the university’s emphasis on academic excellence, leadership development and the promotion of a competitive learning environment.
