The UK Government has awarded Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships to 68 Nigerians to pursue master’s and PhD programmes at universities across the United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom Government has awarded Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships to 68 Nigerians to pursue master’s and PhD programmes at universities across the UK in 2026.
The British High Commission disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying pre-departure ceremonies were held in Abuja and Lagos to honour the successful scholars.
Of the 68 beneficiaries, 12 received Chevening Scholarships, while 56 Nigerians have so far been awarded Commonwealth Scholarships.
The Chargée d’Affaires at the British High Commission in Abuja, Ms Vicky Seymour, congratulated the scholars for succeeding in the highly competitive application and interview process.
Seymour described the scholarships as an investment not only in the individual beneficiaries but also in the future of Nigeria.
“Chevening and Commonwealth Scholars have bright futures and we see their time in the UK not only as an investment in them as individuals, but also in the future of Nigeria.
“On your return to Nigeria, I know you will go on to do great things, just as your alumni have done before you.”
She expressed hope that the scholars would return to Nigeria with valuable experiences and use their knowledge and skills to contribute to the country’s development.
One of the Chevening Scholars, Sarah Nathaniel Yanayork, who will study International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex, described her selection as the validation of a three-year journey marked by resilience, growth and commitment to change.
She said the programme offered more than academic opportunities, describing it as a platform for building global networks, engaging in volunteerism and preparing scholars to contribute to good governance and inclusive development.
“This honour is not just a personal milestone; it is fuel for a lifelong dedication to human rights and community transformation,” she said.
Also speaking, Commonwealth Scholar Abubakar Umar, who will study Special Educational Needs at the University of Exeter, described the award as particularly significant as a person with a hearing impairment.
He said the scholarship represented the beginning of a journey towards greater resilience and inclusivity.
The UK Government funds Chevening as its international scholarship programme for future leaders, while Commonwealth Scholarships support postgraduate study and development-focused education for scholars from eligible Commonwealth countries.
Nigeria has a large alumni network, with more than 5,237 alumni across the Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programmes, according to the British High Commission.
Applications for the 2027/2028 Chevening Scholarships are currently open to eligible Nigerians and will close on October 6, 2026, at 11:00 UTC.
