President Bola Tinubu has mourned NPC Chairman Dr Aminu Yusuf, describing his death as a profound loss to Niger State and Nigeria and praising his legacy of dedicated public service.
President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf, describing his passing as a profound loss to Niger State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Dr Yusuf died on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the age of 66, following a brief illness. The National Population Commission confirmed his death, noting that he passed away in Abuja.
President Tinubu extended his condolences to the Government and people of Niger State, particularly the people of Wushishi Local Government Area, as well as the late NPC Chairman’s family, friends, associates and colleagues.
The President described Yusuf as a distinguished son of Niger State, a consummate public servant and a patriot whose life was defined by service to his community, state and country.
“Dr Aminu Yusuf was a loyal public servant, a patriot and a distinguished son of Niger State whose life was defined by service and commitment to the common good,” the President said.
Before his appointment as NPC Chairman, Yusuf had built a long record of public service spanning governance, politics and community development.
He previously served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area and held several other public positions, including serving on the board of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and as Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State.
Yusuf was sworn in as the eighth substantive Chairman of the National Population Commission by President Tinubu in December 2025. During his brief tenure, he championed a seven-point agenda aimed at repositioning the Commission and strengthening its capacity to provide reliable demographic data for national planning and development.
President Tinubu said Yusuf brought a clear vision and strong commitment to strengthening the Commission and ensuring that Nigeria had the reliable population data required for effective planning and development.
“Although his tenure as Chairman of the NPC was brief, he brought to the office a clear vision and an earnest commitment to strengthening the Commission and ensuring that Nigeria has the reliable demographic data required for sound planning and development,” the President said.
The President said the late public servant would be remembered for his dedication and contributions to national development.
Tinubu also urged the leadership and staff of the National Population Commission to preserve Yusuf’s legacy by remaining committed to the reforms and institutional strengthening he championed during his tenure.
The President prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive the late NPC Chairman’s shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus and give his family, colleagues and loved ones the strength to bear what he described as an irreparable loss.
