Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed a report claiming he was offered ₦500 billion to contest against NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi to split South-South votes ahead of the 2027 elections.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed as false and baseless a report alleging that he was offered ₦500 billion to contest against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in order to split votes in the South-South ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Ikechukwu Eze, rejected the claim in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, describing the publication as a fabrication designed to mislead the public.
Eze urged Nigerians to disregard the report, which he said originated from a little-known website and falsely attributed the claim to the former president.
According to him, the publication failed to meet the basic standards of journalism.
“The report failed to state where or when Jonathan allegedly made such a claim, who was present or who purportedly made the alleged offer,” Eze said.
He maintained that the report bore all the hallmarks of fake news deliberately crafted to drag Jonathan into unnecessary political controversy.
The media aide noted that the approach of an election season often leads to increased misinformation and the circulation of false statements attributed to prominent political figures.
He therefore advised Nigerians to ignore the publication entirely and verify sensational political claims through credible sources before sharing them.
Jonathan has not indicated any intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, while his media office insisted that the former president should not be linked to fabricated reports aimed at creating political tension.
