Former CAN Chairman in Niger State, Rev. Dr. Mathias Echioda, has urged Nigerians to intensify prayers for the country and elect credible, competent leaders in the 2027 general elections, stressing that national unity and good governance depend on responsible leadership and active citizen participation.
A former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger State Chapter, Rev. Dr. Mathias Echioda, has called on Nigerians to intensify prayers for the country and elect credible leaders in the 2027 general elections.
Echioda, who also served as Chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Niger State Chapter, made the appeal during an interview with journalists on the sidelines of his church’s Founder’s Day celebration in Minna.
He said both government and citizens have complementary roles in promoting peace, national unity and sustainable development.
According to the cleric, government must continue to protect lives and property, improve the welfare of citizens and address the country’s socio-economic and security challenges.
He also urged Nigerians to respect constituted authority, pray for leaders and engage government constructively by drawing attention to challenges affecting their communities.
“Leadership is not an easy task. It is easier to criticise those in authority than to occupy positions of responsibility,” he said.
Echioda reaffirmed the church’s commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence among Nigerians regardless of ethnic, religious or cultural differences, describing national unity as essential for sustainable development.
He encouraged Christians to contribute to nation-building through integrity, service and commitment to peace, urging them to use their talents and opportunities to positively impact society.
Speaking on the 2027 general elections, the former CAN chairman called on eligible voters to actively participate in the electoral process by supporting competent, God-fearing and credible candidates with proven records of service.
He also appealed to political leaders and the electorate to reject politics driven by ethnicity, religion, corruption and personal interests, urging Nigerians instead to support candidates with the character, competence and integrity to deliver good governance.
Echioda disclosed that special prayers were offered during the Founder’s Day service for Nigeria’s peace and unity, improved security, the nation’s leaders and peaceful, free and credible elections in 2027.
He added that the church had commenced a seven-day prayer and fasting programme focused on national peace and unity, enhanced security, divine guidance for leaders and a peaceful electoral process ahead of the 2027 polls.
