President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated a 600-metre underpass and a 3.7-kilometre dualised township road network in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, describing the projects as key investments in infrastructure and economic development.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday inaugurated a 600-metre underpass and a 3.7-kilometre dualised township road network in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, describing the projects as major investments in infrastructure and economic growth.
The projects were executed by the Nasarawa State Government under its urban renewal programme aimed at modernising infrastructure and improving transportation across the state.
Representing the President at the inauguration, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, said the projects would ease traffic congestion, improve mobility and stimulate economic activities in Akwanga and surrounding communities.
Tinubu noted that residents and travellers familiar with Akwanga would appreciate the significant transformation brought about by the new road infrastructure.
“Anybody who has seen this road before this time knows how congested it has been. The congestion and delays, especially during festive periods, made it take hours to pass through,” the President said.
He commended the Nasarawa State Government for completing the projects within a short period and praised Governor Abdullahi Sule for expanding infrastructure development across the state.
“I came through Karu and saw the extraordinary work you are doing there. You are doing a great job in developing road infrastructure and providing other amenities for the people of the state,” Tinubu stated.
The President said the projects align with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises the provision of critical infrastructure to support economic development and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.
He added that the investments would further position the area as an important transit corridor while enhancing connectivity across the region.
Earlier, Governor Abdullahi Sule thanked President Tinubu for inaugurating the projects and making them available for public use.
The governor disclosed that the underpass, dualised roads and several other infrastructure projects across Nasarawa State were executed without borrowing from any financial institution.
According to Sule, the projects were funded through increased revenue accruing to states following the Federal Government’s economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy, the unification of the foreign exchange market and the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue.
He said the state’s monthly allocation had risen significantly from between ₦3.5 billion and ₦4 billion when his administration assumed office in 2019 to between ₦13 billion and ₦15 billion.
Sule said the improved revenue had enabled the state government to undertake major infrastructure projects and pledged to sustain the pace of development until the end of his administration in 2027.
The governor also reaffirmed Nasarawa State’s support for President Tinubu’s administration, expressing confidence that residents would reward the government’s developmental efforts in future elections.
During his visit to Akwanga, President Tinubu also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed 700-kilometre Akwanga-Kaduna-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri Superhighway, a flagship road project expected to strengthen regional connectivity and boost economic activities across northern Nigeria.
