Police in Enugu State have detained a suspected cultism and armed robbery suspect, recovering a gun-like object, drugs, and other exhibits during an intelligence-led operation in the New Artisan area.

The Enugu State Police Command has detained a suspected armed robber and cultist, recovering weapons and suspected illicit substances during an operation in Enugu.

The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by its spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe.

According to Ndukwe, operatives attached to the Anti-Cultism Sub-Unit of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) carried out the operation on May 26 at about 8:30 p.m. following credible intelligence.

He said the police team raided a suspected criminal hideout in the New Artisan area of Enugu, leading to the arrest of 28-year-old Joseph Osani of Premier Layout.

During the operation, officers reportedly recovered a silver-coloured gun-like object allegedly used in robbing members of the public.

Other exhibits recovered from the suspect included a dagger, 10 wraps of substances suspected to be methamphetamine, and a sachet containing substance believed to be cannabis sativa.

Ndukwe said the suspect allegedly confessed to being a member of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity.

He added that investigations were ongoing to uncover possible links to other criminal networks and ensure diligent prosecution of those involved.

The spokesperson noted that the operation reflects the command’s continued efforts to combat violent crime and criminal activities across the state.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling criminality and maintaining public safety.

He urged residents to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and supportive of security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid crime prevention and law enforcement efforts.
