To ensure strict public compliance with sanitary laws, the Lagos State Government arrests 931 individuals and seals 239 sites during targeted clean-up sweeps.
The Lagos State Government has announced the arrest of 931 individuals for various waste-related offences during a series of intensified environmental enforcement operations conducted across the metropolis over the trailing twelve months.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, made the disclosure on Sunday during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja. Wahab stated that the state ministry deliberately strengthened its Monitoring, Enforcement, and Compliance (MEC) operations as part of a strategic roadmap to compel stricter adherence to existing environmental laws and public sanitation standards statewide.
Providing a detailed breakdown of the regulatory enforcement drive, the Commissioner revealed that beyond the 931 apprehensions, tactical state officials inspected 2,251 suspect locations, issued 1,711 formal contravention notices, and successfully sealed 239 non-compliant facilities.
Furthermore, dedicated emergency evacuation teams cleared more than 650 tonnes of construction waste from different communities, while sustaining targeted stakeholder engagements to raise public awareness regarding the proper management of demolition debris and disaster-induced waste.
Parallel to its physical waste management efforts, the state government expanded its environmental monitoring network through the deployment of modern air quality tracking infrastructure.
The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) successfully completed the installation of 114 specialized air quality sensors and completely rehabilitated several pollution abatement facilities across the state’s five administrative divisions.
Wahab explained that this technology-driven expansion is specifically designed to enhance real-time air quality management, suppress dangerous emission levels, and safeguard the respiratory health of millions of residents.
Additionally, the ministry introduced cleaner, eco-friendly fish processing technology to local processors at the Ago Egun community through the deployment of highly improved fish kilns. This grassroots initiative successfully slashed thick smoke emissions, refined localized air quality, and insulated the health of community processors from toxic inhalation.
Reaffirming the administration’s policy direction, the Commissioner stated that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains unyieldingly committed to instilling absolute institutional adherence to urban environmental regulations, relying heavily on modern technology to deliver cleaner, flood-resistant, and sustainable communities for all Lagosians.
