The Enugu State Government has vowed to pursue “thorough and expedited” justice following the arrest of Mrs. Ogechi John for the alleged homicide of her 9-year-old stepdaughter, Amanda, in the Emene area of the state capital.
The Enugu State Government and the Police have arrested a woman, Mrs. Ogechi John, over the alleged homicide of her nine-year-old stepdaughter in the Emene area of Enugu metropolis.
Mrs. John, said to be from Oderiko in Ebonyi State’s Ikwo Local Government Area, was apprehended by police operatives on Monday morning following allegations that she beat the child, Miss Ogechi Amanda John, to death at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene.
Residents of the area disclosed that the tragic incident allegedly occurred around 3 p.m. on Sunday. Neighbours further alleged that the deceased had repeatedly suffered severe maltreatment from her stepmother prior to her death.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development in Enugu State, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, condemned the incident and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting children and prosecuting offenders.
According to her, the administration of Governor Peter Mbah maintains zero tolerance for child abuse and homicide.
“It is on record that the Governor Peter Mbah Administration has zero tolerance for any form of child abuse, let alone child homicide. So, we swung into action on learning about this tragedy to ensure that the suspect was arrested,” she stated.
The commissioner added that the government would pursue a thorough and expedited investigation to ensure justice is served without delay.
“Nobody should take another’s life and certainly not the life of any child in Enugu State. We condemn it in totality,” Enih said.
