Citing a wave of federal litigations and internal instability, Senate Minority Whip Tony Nwoye has officially left the African Democratic Congress to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

The Senate Minority Whip, Senator Tony Nwoye, has formally resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The announcement was made during Wednesday’s plenary session in Abuja, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the official resignation letter submitted by the lawmaker.

Nwoye, who represents the Anambra South Senatorial District, attributed his decision to the deep-seated internal divisions and the crippling legal battles currently facing his former party at the Federal High Court.

In his letter, Senator Nwoye explained that the ADC has been plagued by multiple litigations and conflicting court judgments that have severely undermined its cohesion, organizational structure, and overall political stability.

He noted that these distractions made it increasingly difficult for the party to function as a unified entity, prompting his need to seek a more stable political platform. “This decision has become necessary due to the ongoing multiple litigations at the Federal High Court and court judgments affecting the party, which unfortunately affected its creation and stability,” the Senator stated.

Following the formal reading of the letter, Senate President Akpabio directed the Clerk of the Senate to update the official chamber records to reflect Nwoye’s new party affiliation.

Akpabio also extended his well wishes to the lawmaker as he transitioned into the NDC. This move marks another significant shift in the Senate’s minority leadership composition and follows a broader trend of legislative realignments as parties grapple with internal administrative challenges ahead of future electoral cycles.
