MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) is working to restore power after a severe Sunday storm damaged critical infrastructure, including distribution towers and 33kV lines.

MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has notified customers across several parts of the Enugu metropolis regarding a significant power outage caused by heavy rainfall and strong winds on Sunday afternoon. The severe weather conditions led to a wire cut on the Emene Industrial Lines 1 and 2, which subsequently impacted a distribution tower. This damage disrupted the supply to several 33kV feeders located within the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Switch Yard at the New Haven Station.

The affected feeders include the Trans Ekulu, Thinkers Corner, Ituku Ozalla, and Ugwogo 33kV lines. As a result of this infrastructure failure, a wide range of neighborhoods and industrial areas are currently experiencing a total blackout. The areas listed by the distribution company include Trans Ekulu, Emene, Thinkers Corner, Emenite, Airport, Alo Aluminium, Akpuoga, Nkwubor, Ugwuomu, Abakpa Nike, Nike Lake, and Ugwogo, along with their surrounding environments.

MEDL has assured the public that its technical team is currently on-site and working diligently to rectify the faults and repair the damaged distribution tower.

The company emphasized its commitment to returning electricity supply to the affected areas as quickly as possible. While expressing sincere regret for the inconvenience caused to residents and businesses, the utility provider noted that the development was an unforeseen result of the extreme weather event.

No specific timeline for full restoration was provided, but work is ongoing to stabilize the New Haven Station Switch Yard.
