ABUJA – The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the police team involved in a fatal shooting incident in Effurun to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
This directive, announced on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Placid, mandates the affected officers to report for a formal appearance before the Force Disciplinary Committee, where they will face summary disciplinary measures and subsequent prosecution.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday in the Effurun area of Delta State, resulted in the death of a suspect identified as Mene Ogidi. According to preliminary reports, the tragedy unfolded when police operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to credible intelligence regarding a suspect apprehended by transport union members at a Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway.
The suspect had reportedly been detained by the union members after attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol along with four rounds of ammunition.
The Force spokesperson noted that while efforts were being made to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm in clear violation of extant regulations. This action resulted in the death of the suspect, prompting an immediate investigation by the police leadership.
The Inspector-General has since extended his formal condolences to the family of the deceased, offering assurances that the legal process will be followed rigorously to ensure justice is served.
In the wake of the incident, the police administration has emphasized that it maintains a zero-tolerance stance regarding extra-judicial actions, abuse of authority, and any conduct that undermines public trust. The Inspector-General has enjoined the public to remain calm and law-abiding while the necessary disciplinary and legal processes take their course.
