The Sultan of Sokoto has declared Friday as Eid-el-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal 1447 AH in Nigeria.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as Eid-el-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal 1447 AH in Nigeria.

The declaration followed the non-sighting of the new crescent moon of Shawwal, as confirmed by the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in collaboration with the National Moon Sighting Committee.

According to the Sultan, Wednesday, March 18, corresponds to the 29th day of Ramadan, making Thursday the 30th day, and consequently fixing Friday as the first day of Shawwal.

The Sultan urged Muslims to sustain the spiritual lessons of Ramadan, including devotion, charity, and discipline.

He also called on the faithful to continue praying for peace, unity, and national progress, while encouraging support for the less privileged.

The religious leader stressed the importance of tolerance and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, urging citizens to work collectively toward national development.

Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, begins with the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr, one of the most significant festivals in Islam.
