The Nigeria Customs Service recorded a major seizure of illicit goods worth about N1.4 billion in Ogun State, reinforcing ongoing efforts to combat smuggling and protect Nigeria’s economy.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recorded a major seizure of illicit goods valued at about N1.35 billion in Ogun State between January and March 2026.
The Area Comptroller of the Ogun Area 1 Command in Idiroko, Olukayode Afeni, disclosed this during a news conference on Monday.
Afeni said the command’s achievements were made possible through intelligence-driven operations and the commitment of officers to curb smuggling activities along the border corridor.
According to him, the seized items have a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N1,350,751,000, reflecting the scale of illegal trade intercepted by the command.
The customs boss listed the seized items to include:
1,204 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 2,547 parcels of Cannabis sativa of different sizes, 545 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit (13,625 litres), 36 cartons of bardinet syrup, Eight packs of perfumed oil.
Other confiscated items included 13 used tyres, 50 bags of imported sugar, eight bales of second-hand clothing and 15 sacks of used clothing.
Afeni also disclosed that five sacks of used ladies’ handbags, two sacks of used footwear, two used vehicles and two pieces of antiquities were among the items seized during the operations.
Beyond enforcement, the command also recorded strong revenue performance.
Afeni said the command generated N285,652,460 between January and March 2026 from baggage assessments and auction sales of petroleum products intercepted during anti-smuggling operations.
He noted that the amount surpassed revenue generated during the same period in 2025.
The comptroller warned individuals engaged in smuggling to desist, stressing that the command would continue to enforce customs laws to protect Nigeria’s economy.
“The seizures send a strong message to those who refuse to embrace legitimate business,” Afeni said.
He added that the command remains committed to safeguarding national economic interests and preventing illegal trade activities.
Afeni also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, for his continued support and confidence in the command’s operations.
