The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has said it will determine the outcome and end of the ongoing conflict involving Iran, rejecting remarks by former Donald Trump suggesting the war is nearly over.
In a statement reported by Tasnim News Agency, the elite Iranian military force said the final outcome of the conflict would be decided by Iran.
“We are the ones who will determine the end of the war,” the IRGC said.
“The conditions on the battlefield and the end of the war are in the hands of the Islamic Republic,” the statement added.
Trump earlier told CBS News in a phone interview that the conflict was largely complete.
“I think the war is very complete, pretty much,” he said.
He claimed that Iran’s military capabilities had been severely degraded, alleging that the country had lost much of its naval strength, air power and communications systems.
According to Trump, Iran’s missile and drone capabilities had also been significantly weakened.
The conflict escalated at the end of February when forces from Israel and the United States launched coordinated attacks on Iran.
The strikes targeted the country’s political and military leadership, as well as strategic assets including air defence systems, naval forces, the air force and drone manufacturing facilities.
At the start of the campaign, Trump said he expected the military operation to last about four to five weeks.
However, last week, Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for the U.S. government, suggested the timeline could extend to four to six weeks.
The latest statement from the IRGC indicates that Tehran is rejecting claims that the conflict is nearing an end, signalling that tensions in the region may continue.
