The Niger State Police Command has confirmed that suspected armed bandits attacked Agwara community in the early hours of Sunday, setting ablaze a police station and part of a church, and abducting several residents.
The incident was confirmed in a statement issued in Minna by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Wasiu Abiodun.
According to the police spokesman, the attack occurred at about 3:40 a.m. when the assailants invaded the Agwara Police Station.
He said that police officers on duty, supported by a tactical team, engaged the attackers, but the bandits later overpowered the officers and allegedly used suspected dynamite to set the station on fire.
Abiodun added that after torching the police facility, the bandits moved to the United Methodist Church (UMC) in the same community, where they burnt part of the church building.
The assailants were also reported to have proceeded to other parts of Agwara community, where they abducted about five persons, whose identities were yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.
“The situation is being monitored, and further developments will be communicated in due course,” the police spokesman said.
He assured that security agencies had commenced investigations and intensified efforts to track down the perpetrators and rescue the abducted victims, while measures had also been taken to prevent further attacks in the area.
