The Enugu State Government has dismissed reports claiming that it is selling major government institutions and facilities, clarifying that only selected unserviceable assets at the affected locations are being considered for disposal.
The Enugu State Government has dismissed as false and misleading a social media report claiming that the administration is selling assets belonging to the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS), Enugu State Water Corporation, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the state’s Liaison Office in Lagos.
The clarification was issued on Wednesday, August 27, 2026, by the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Dr Nathaniel Urama, who said the circulating publication did not emanate from either the Enugu State Government or the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.
Urama explained that while the government intends to dispose of some assets at the listed government facilities, the proposed exercise concerns only items that have become unserviceable and are no longer useful to the state, rather than the institutions or facilities themselves.
He stressed that the government had not announced the sale of ESBS, the Enugu State Water Corporation, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium or the Lagos Liaison Office.
“The information is erroneous and it is neither from Enugu State Government nor the State Ministry of Finance. We, therefore, advise the general public to please ignore the message circulating in the media,” Urama said.
The commissioner said any disposal of unserviceable government assets would be conducted in accordance with applicable laws and established due process.
According to him, prospective bidders would be required to obtain details of the specific assets from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development before submitting their bids through the prescribed procedure.
The clarification is significant because a separate report published on August 26 had stated that the state Ministry of Finance had commenced a bidding process for selected assets associated with the Enugu State Water Corporation, ESBS, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the Lagos Liaison Office.
The government’s position is that such a disposal exercise should not be interpreted as the sale of the institutions or the facilities where the unserviceable items are located.
Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, for instance, remains part of the state government’s ongoing infrastructure programme. The state’s 2026 budget specifically provides for the completion of extensive renovation of the stadium as part of preparations for the 23rd National Sports Festival.
The government has also continued to maintain and upgrade water infrastructure in the state. The Enugu State Water Corporation recently announced temporary disruption to water supply in parts of the metropolis to enable the realignment of a major transmission pipeline around the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium area.
Urama urged members of the public and media organisations to verify information through official government channels before sharing or publishing reports concerning government activities.
He warned against the spread of fake news and deliberate misrepresentation, stressing that any official notice concerning the disposal of unserviceable assets would be formally published through the appropriate channels.
The Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Dr Nathaniel Emeka Urama, is responsible for the state’s finance and economic development portfolio under the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.
The government therefore advised the public to distinguish between the disposal of obsolete or unserviceable government property and the alleged sale of the institutions and major public facilities themselves.
