The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a suspected cultist in Oji River Local Government Area, recovering a locally made pistol, live ammunition and other exhibits as part of ongoing efforts to combat cultism and violent crime in the state.

The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspected cultist and the recovery of a firearm, live ammunition and other incriminating exhibits during an operation in Oji River Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday, stating that the suspect was apprehended by operatives attached to the Oji River Police Division in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group.

According to Ndukwe, the suspect, a 25-year-old man from Awka in Anambra State, was arrested on June 13 at about 2:00 p.m. following a swift response by security operatives to credible intelligence regarding his presence at a known criminal hideout within the Garki-Ugwuoba axis of Oji River.

The police spokesman said the operation led to the recovery of a locally made double-barrelled pistol loaded with one live cartridge, as well as a lighter and other exhibits believed to be connected to criminal activities.

“The suspect is currently assisting the police in ongoing investigations aimed at identifying and apprehending his criminal associates, as well as uncovering their involvement in cult-related and other criminal activities within the area,” Ndukwe said.

He added that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The spokesperson noted that the operation forms part of the command’s sustained efforts to curb cultism, violent crimes and other security threats across Enugu State.

Ndukwe further revealed that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mamman Giwa, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of residents.

The police commissioner also urged members of the public to remain vigilant, obey the law and continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies to strengthen crime prevention efforts.

The command assured residents that it would sustain intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and improving public safety across the state.
