The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a landslide victory in the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election, with Chief Ikeje Asogwa defeating his closest rival by a wide margin to emerge senator-elect for the district.
Mr. Ikeje Asogwa, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has emerged winner of the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election conducted on June 20, 2026.
Asogwa secured a decisive victory in the poll, garnering 162,360 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Chief Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 9,299 votes.
The by-election was held to fill the vacant Enugu North Senatorial seat following the death of Senator Okey Ezea, who represented the district until his passing on November 18, 2025, at the age of 62.
Announcing the results on Sunday in Nsukka, the Returning Officer for the election, Professor Christian Ezeibe, Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), declared Asogwa the winner after securing the highest number of valid votes cast.
“Asogwa, having satisfied the requirements of the law in this election, is hereby declared the winner and is returned,” Ezeibe stated.
He commended stakeholders, electoral officials, political parties and voters for their cooperation throughout the electoral process.
“I thank you all for your cooperation, support and maturity that made the by-election a success,” he added.
According to the Returning Officer, Enugu North Senatorial District has 727,340 registered voters, while 184,094 voters were accredited to participate in the election.
A breakdown of the results showed that Chika Idoko Emmanuel of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secured 1,676 votes, while Kingsley Aneke of the Boot Party (BP) polled 1,607 votes.
Other candidates included Ejike Simon Eze of the Labour Party (LP), who received 1,027 votes; OssElias Okwudiri Ossai of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), who scored 3,129 votes; and Charles Ugochukwu of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), who garnered 667 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Asogwa described the outcome as a reflection of the overwhelming confidence reposed in him by voters across the six local government areas that make up the Enugu North Senatorial District.
The senator-elect pledged to provide effective and quality representation, assuring constituents that he would work diligently to justify the trust and support demonstrated through the ballot.
The victory marks a significant political gain for the APC in Enugu State and concludes the electoral process initiated to fill the vacancy created by the late senator’s death.
