Enugu

Enugu State has won the Infrastructure Development Competitiveness Award and Outstanding Performance in Internally Generated Revenue Award at the 2025 BusinessDay States Competitiveness and Investment Readiness Awards, with officials attributing the recognition to ongoing reforms and infrastructure investments under Governor Peter Mbah’s administration.

ABUJA, June 19, 2026 – Enugu State has emerged as one of the top-performing states in Nigeria at the 2025 BusinessDay States Competitiveness and Investment Readiness Awards (SCIRA), securing awards for Infrastructure Development Competitiveness and Outstanding Performance in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

The awards were presented in Abuja on Thursday night, with the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ben Okoh, and the Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS), Mr. Emmanuel Nnamani, receiving the honours on behalf of Governor Peter Mbah.

Speaking during the presentation, the Publisher and Chief Executive Officer of BusinessDay Media Limited commended the Mbah administration for its approach to infrastructure development and prudent resource management.

He said the governor had demonstrated a practical approach to governance by completing inherited projects and extending infrastructure development beyond major urban centres.

According to him, Enugu’s transformation was evident in the quality of road projects across the state, including rural communities, adding that the administration had shown how effective management of public resources could deliver tangible results.

Responding on behalf of the governor, Okoh described the awards as recognition of the administration’s efforts to transform Enugu State and improve the quality of life for residents.

He said the state had recorded significant progress across key sectors within three years, noting that the honours would serve as motivation for the government to sustain the momentum.

“Enugu State has witnessed an unprecedented infrastructural revolution. We have completed landmark projects that had remained unfinished for years and embarked on new initiatives aimed at positioning the state for long-term growth and development,” he said.

The commissioner highlighted the completion of projects such as the International Conference Centre and the revitalisation of Hotel Presidential and Nigergas Company, facilities that had remained dormant for decades.

He also noted that the administration had delivered more than 600 kilometres of roads, established 267 Smart Green Schools and 260 Primary Healthcare Centres across the state.

Okoh further disclosed that the government was developing a new city project spanning about 10,000 hectares, featuring integrated underground infrastructure for power, telecommunications and water systems.

He said the administration’s interventions extended beyond infrastructure to sectors such as transportation, tourism, agriculture, security and education, citing the launch of Enugu Air, deployment of over 150 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and construction of five ultra-modern transport terminals.

The state’s strong performance in revenue generation was also recognised at the awards.

Official figures indicate that Enugu’s internally generated revenue grew from N26.8 billion in 2022 to N37.4 billion in 2023, before rising sharply to N180.5 billion in 2024 and N406.7 billion in 2025 following a series of revenue reforms and technology-driven initiatives.

BusinessDay’s States Competitiveness and Investment Readiness Awards celebrate states demonstrating excellence in governance, economic management, infrastructure development, investment promotion and the creation of an enabling environment for businesses and citizens.
