A 26-year-old man, Kevin Moses, has appeared before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing and selling his girlfriend’s iPhone valued at N650,000.
A 26-year-old resident of Sabon Tasha, Kevin Moses, was arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after being accused of stealing an iPhone valued at N650,000 belonging to his girlfriend.
The defendant is facing a formal charge of stealing, a criminal offense that carried severe consequences under state laws.
Presenting the case before the court, the Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Chidi Leo, disclosed that the incident occurred on May 31, 2026, within the Barnawa axis of Kaduna. According to the police timeline, the complainant, Sharon James, was attending a child dedication ceremony at the residence of the defendant’s uncle when her mobile device went missing.
Inspector Leo further explained that the stolen smartphone was recovered following an aggressive digital tracking operation executed by cyber units. The track led operatives directly to an third-party buyer who confessed during interrogation that he bought the high-end device from the defendant.
The prosecutor emphasized that the actions of the defendant directly violated Section 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.
Legal Provision: If found guilty under Section 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, the defendant faces a mandatory maximum sentence of five years imprisonment.
When the charge was read to him, the defendant entered a plea of not guilty.
Presiding Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, requiring two verified sureties in a matching amount.
As a strict condition for the bond, Magistrate Emmanuel ruled that the sureties must submit proof of tax payments to the Kaduna State Government and possess verifiable residential addresses within the legal jurisdiction of the court. The case was subsequently adjourned until July 22, 2026, for a full evidentiary hearing.
