President Bola Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that his administration will not surrender to terrorists, bandits or criminal elements, while pledging renewed efforts to address economic hardship, improve security and secure the release of citizens held captive across the country.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration remains committed to addressing economic challenges and strengthening national security, declaring that the Federal Government will not yield to terrorists, bandits or other criminal groups threatening the country’s stability.
The President’s message was delivered on Sunday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
The service, themed “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” brought together senior government officials, religious leaders and other dignitaries to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and national aspirations.
In his remarks, Akume congratulated Nigerians on 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, describing the achievement as a reflection of the resilience and sacrifices of citizens who fought for the restoration of democracy.
He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 democratic struggle, noting that many endured persecution, imprisonment and even death in pursuit of democratic governance.
According to the SGF, President Tinubu remains focused on delivering sustainable democratic dividends and addressing the socio-economic challenges confronting millions of Nigerians.
He acknowledged the hardship currently experienced by many households, including rising economic pressures, insecurity, kidnappings and displacement in several communities.
“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” Akume said.
He stated that the President is leading efforts to tackle the challenges with compassion, determination and a strong sense of responsibility.
On security, Akume reiterated that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority for the administration. He described recent attacks, kidnappings and acts of violence as painful reminders of the work still required to restore lasting peace and stability across the country.
The SGF assured Nigerians that the government remains committed to securing the release of all persons currently held captive and is providing security agencies with the resources needed to combat criminal activities effectively.
“The government will never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” he declared.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Akume urged Nigerians to reject violence, divisive rhetoric and hate-driven campaigns that could undermine national unity.
He particularly cautioned young people against participating in political thuggery, misinformation campaigns, ethnic hostility and religious intolerance.
“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” he advised.
Akume also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, the media and families to promote peaceful coexistence, tolerance and responsible civic engagement as political activities intensify.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to democracy, interfaith harmony and constructive engagement with the international community, stressing that the country’s democratic institutions remain resilient despite existing challenges.
The SGF further commended members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting the nation and preserving democratic governance.
He urged Nigerians to honour the legacy of the June 12 heroes by working collectively toward a nation where elections are peaceful, leadership is accountable, communities are secure and citizens enjoy dignity and opportunity.
