A major fire outbreak has destroyed a plastic store in Osogbo, Osun State, leaving goods worth millions of naira in ruins. Firefighters successfully contained the blaze, while authorities have commenced investigations into the cause of the incident.

A devastating fire outbreak on Sunday razed a popular plastic merchandise outlet, Iyanu Plastic, in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, destroying goods and property worth millions of naira.

The incident, which occurred in the afternoon, drew an emergency response from personnel of the Osun State Fire Service, who battled for hours to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.

Confirming the incident, Mr. Ibrahim Adekunle, Assistant Director of Operations at the Osun Fire Service, said firefighters responded promptly after receiving a distress call at about 2:30 p.m.

According to Adekunle, the nature of the materials stored in the shop made firefighting operations particularly challenging, as plastic products are highly flammable and can rapidly intensify a blaze.

“Officials were able to subdue the fire. The fire destroyed all the plastics, and it was difficult to control because the materials were flammable,” he said.

Although the entire stock of plastic products was reportedly consumed by the fire, no casualties or injuries were recorded during the incident.

Fire service officials said investigations were ongoing to determine the exact cause of the outbreak, as preliminary assessments had not established whether the incident resulted from an electrical fault, negligence or any other factor.

The latest incident adds to concerns over recurring fire disasters in Osun State.

According to official records released by the Osun Fire Service, property valued at approximately N5.42 billion was destroyed in fire outbreaks across the state between January and December 2025.

The report indicated that a total of 101 fire incidents were recorded during the period, highlighting the significant economic impact of fire disasters on businesses, households and public infrastructure.

Safety experts have repeatedly called on business owners and residents to adopt preventive measures, including regular electrical inspections, installation of firefighting equipment and adherence to fire safety regulations, to reduce the risk of similar incidents.

Authorities are expected to release further details after completing investigations into the Osogbo fire outbreak.
